  1. Appropriation

Appropriation: The action in which you steal work and change original pieces to represent new values.

With the task in mind i looked at advertisements from 1950’s and onwards to get inspiration for my appropriation Project.

The first advertisement i came across was for Lego which promoted the creativity of children. Through this i came up with the idea of how modern day creativity is often restrained by the government. I thought to express this in the photo by removing the children’s identities through covering their eyes which connotes to how we are just a statistic to be controlled by the governments tight control. I also placed security camera’s around the children to express how we are constantly under surveillance and though we are allowed some freedom of creativity many artists such as Banksy hide their identity so they can express their opinion without government restraints.

The second advertisement i chose was a smoking advert that promoted the health benefits of smoking and how it can help with your appeal also. through an ironic message i decided to replace her face with a skull which shows the extreme “benefits” of smoking. the skull represents not only death but also the obsession of being slim.

The third and final advertisement i chose was a shampoo and conditioner advert that promoted the product on how it repairs split ends and keeps your hair in top condition. I decided to take an image of cracked sand and place it on her face to give the new meaning of that beauty products can’t ‘repair’ everything. for example the woman will have soft hair but it would still not hide any inner issues that she is going though therefore there are cracks through the illusion.
